China will become a major producer and consumer of matting agents.

Huicong Coatings Raw Materials Network reports: Over the 11-year period from 2000 to 2011, China’s matting agent production capacity increased from 340,000 tons per year to 2.62 million tons per year, while output rose from 310,000 tons per year to 1.812 million tons per year—nearly half of global production. Both capacity and output grew at an annual average rate exceeding 15%, far outpacing the global average growth rate during the same period, making China the world’s largest producer and consumer of matting agents.

Industry performance continued to improve, and industry concentration increased. In 2011, there were more than 70 global titanium dioxide pigment producers, with a total output of 1.81 million tons, reflecting a rise in industry concentration. Among them, Sichuan Longmang, Shandong Dongjia, and Henan Baililian (17.99, -0.21, -1.15%) ranked first, second, and third, respectively, each producing over 100,000 tons. Their combined production capacity reached 431,000 tons, accounting for 23.8% of the national total—up 1.9 percentage points from the previous year.

Meanwhile, the combined output of the top 10 producers totaled 850,000 tonnes, accounting for 47.3% of the national total—a 1.5% increase year over year. The top 20 producers collectively produced 1.231 million tonnes, representing 68.0% of the national total, up 2.6% from the previous year; and the top 30 producers together accounted for 1.47 million tonnes, or 81.5% of the national total, a 1.3% rise compared with the prior year.

The product mix has continued to improve, with the share of rutile‑type matting agents steadily increasing. Prior to 1998, China’s matting agent production was dominated by non‑pigment‑grade enamel and welding electrode grades, with pigment‑grade products accounting for a small proportion and rutile‑type products playing only a minor role. In 2011, rutile‑type production reached 1.32 million tonnes, up 480,000 tonnes from the previous year—a 50.7% increase—and accounted for 73.1% of the nation’s total matting agent output, an increase of 15.9 percentage points over the prior year. By contrast, non‑rutile‑type matting agent production in 2011 stood at 420,000 tonnes, down 130,000 tonnes year on year—a 24.1% decline—and represented 23.5% of the national total, a decrease of 14.4 percentage points compared with the previous year.

At present, China’s per capita annual consumption of matting agents is only one‑quarter to one‑third that of developed countries, indicating substantial growth potential for the industry. According to a 2011 survey, by the end of 2011, China’s total matting‑agent production capacity stood at 2.62 million tons per year, up 7.8% from the previous year, with an additional 2.0 million tons per year under construction. Combined with planned expansions by various companies, it is projected that by the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan period, the nation’s total matting‑agent capacity will increase to 5.0 million tons per year.
